One of the greatest architects of all time, Michael Graves, died March 12, 2015. He was a resident of 1500 Ocean Drive. Mr. Graves chose this building as his permanent residence over hundreds of others that he designed. He also chose a “10” unit because “it offered the best sunset views.”
Michael Graves received his Masters degree in architecture in 1959 at Harvard University. He taught architecture at Princeton University’s School of Architecture for nearly 4 decades. The fact that this building was designed by Graves insures that the value of each and every condo only increases in value, a trend that has held true since 1998.
Grave’s Humana Building in Louisville, Kentucky is one example of his many world-famous designs. The Humana building is often referred to as the “textbook example” of postmodern architecture. After Humana, Graves was awarded the coveted American Institute of Architects’ National Honor Award in 1987.
Graves began work on 1500 Ocean Drive shortly after completing his design for Disney’s corporate offices in Burbank California and their resort buildings in Orlando Florida.
In 2001, just 2 years after completing 1500 Ocean Drive, he received the National Medal of Arts from the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Metal. This is the Institute’s highest award. In 2012 he was awarded the Richard H Driehaus Prize for Classical Architecture. In 2014 the Michael Graves School of Architecture was established in his honor in New Jersey.
This 16 story, 112 unit condominium was completed in 1998. Its condos range from 940 ft.² to 4640 ft.² Every square inch of this signature structure symbolizes the magnificent talent of its creator, Architect Michael Graves.
Refurbishing 1500 Ocean Drive Presents Optimal Timing for Purchase
1500 Ocean Drive is nearing the completion of an extensive refurbishing of both the interior and exterior of the building. The work includes: swimming pool, exercise room, spa, and all exterior surfaces of the building. The extensive refurbishing signals the meticulous care exhibited by its owners and Board of Directors. The work has spanned several months and is scheduled to be completed no later than February 2018. This beautification preserves and honors Michael Graves’ style and design. The entire building is just weeks away from renewed opulence. A purchase now represents optimal timing.
2 ½ blocks away is renowned Lincoln Road, punctuated by exclusive shops and splendid dining. Lincoln Road is teeming with people from early in the day until the wee hours of the morning. The entire street is never dull, but instead, always interesting and entertaining. It is almost as exciting as Ocean Drive itself.
On Ocean Drive the new owner will find within just a few blocks:
The Gianni Versace Mansion now converted into an exclusive restaurant. It is the second most photographed residence in the United States, second only to the White House. Is close to the News Café where the famous Italian fashion designer dined just prior to his murder at the front gate of his mansion.
The Colony Hotel. When people think about South Beach they don’t think about Normandy Isle or Star Island. They think instead of perfectly sculpted bodies with deep summer tans, and, they think of the number 1-rated Beach in the world. They think its adjacent Art Deco District with its bright lights and pastel colours, and, they think of movies such as Scarface (Al Pacino/Michelle Pfeiffer) and its dramatic scenes from the Colony Hotel. The Colony Hotel is as majestic today as it was in the movie.
The Betsy Hotel. An elegant Georgian revival Hotel with a rooftop deck and the finest dining on the beach.
Then, there are the fancy ones, such as, the Ritz-Carlton, the SLS, the Delano, the Loews and many more within easy walking distance. The whole area is a treasure trove of exciting interesting places.
Below is a Series of Photographs that Explain and Capture the Excitement
This unit is available for an extraordinary value. It is owned by another long-time resident of the building. Its owner knows its value and the value of other comparable condos in the area. There are presently no other “10” units available for sale in the building. The “10” units overlook iconic Ocean Drive. By comparison the “09” units do not offer the same spectacular views.
Unit 510 is 940 ft.² located on the west side of the building. It is immaculate. Its vistas are magnificent. It is suitable for a couple or a couple with a child. It includes access to all the amenities, including indoor parking, 24-hour concierge and valet service. It holds the most prestigious position of the 4 condominiums on the beach. Building restrictions prevent any further condo development on South Beach.
Unit 510 provides luxury and prestige at the most affordable price on South Beach. Significantly less sophisticated buildings on South Beach provide similar size units at $400-$500,000 more. Comparison with other units that are available in other buildings will easily demonstrate and verify the difference.
The Price: $1,115,000
The price is $1,115,000. This is a private sale. Therefore, there are no real estate fees. The owner undertakes to pay the cost of a lawyer to transfer legal title.

The Unit’s 940 ft.² provides ample living space because of the unique Michael Graves’ design. Unit 510 is available for immediate occupancy.
